[22:14] * Joins: preacherswife (JavaUser@privatehost-E05DFF2A.hsd1.ga.comcast.net)
[22:14] <preacherswife> hello nice people! [22:14] <crrj> hello preacherswife [22:14] <preacherswife> is it hard to install a dvd burner? [22:15] <sin> not really, preacherswife. [22:15] <sin> buy one, follow the instructions. [22:15] <preacherswife> could a beginner per say install one? [22:15] <preacherswife> like me? [22:15] <preacherswife> not really a beginner... [22:15] <DSenette-TT> as long as you have an empty ide slot you'll be fine preacherswife [22:15] <sin> pretty much anyone can do it, preacherswife [22:15] <DSenette-TT> they are rellatively plug and play...you'll need to install dvd reading/writing software [22:16] <DSenette-TT> but that should come with the drive [22:16] <preacherswife> i am a beginner in the sense of installing internal thingys [22:16] <sin> you can do it [22:16] <preacherswife> the software wouldn't bother me [22:16] <sin> we have faith [22:16] <preacherswife> on the front of my tower, i have a slot for a dvd burner [22:17] <sin> then you should be fine, preacherswife [22:17] <preacherswife> but i wouldn't know what all the wires would go to inside. see what i'm saying? [22:17] <mike_needs_help> middle [22:17] <DSenette-TT> there are two (three max) cables to connect with a dvd drive [22:17] <sin> it will tell you in the instructions, preacherswife [22:17] <preacherswife> you just push out the slot so to speak, and go from there? [22:17] <DSenette-TT> and all 3 look different and have only one way that they can go in [22:17] <preacherswife> i do LOVE a good challenge [22:18] <sin> it will be a worthwhile effort, preacherswife [22:18] <preacherswife> will i have to remove my cdrw drive? [22:18] <sin> if you have another slot on your box, then no [22:19] <sin> if you only have one slot, then yes [22:19] <sin> but if its a dvd/rw drive, then you'll be ok, because you can still use it to burn cd's [22:19] <preacherswife> the man who built our system was going to do it for us...but as i said, i would love to give it a go too [22:19] <sin> you can do it preacherswife, youre not as inept with computers as you think [22:20] <sin> youll surprise yourself at what you can do [22:20] <preacherswife> he mentioned something about making one the cdrw a slave [22:20] <preacherswife> thanks for the vote of confidence! [22:20] <sin> thats a matter of plugging it into a different place, preacherswife [22:20] <preacherswife> will both work when i install the dvd burner? [22:21] <preacherswife> or will only work at this time? [22:21] <sin> yes [22:21] <sin> as long as you have two slots on your box [22:21] <preacherswife> so i can continue to use the cdrw drive for say burning songs? [22:21] <preacherswife> and use the dvd burner for say digital pics? [22:21] <sin> yup [22:21] <sin> in fact, the dvd burner should be able to do both [22:22] <preacherswife> i am liking this already [22:22] <sin> depending on what kind you get [22:22] <preacherswife> heard of mad dog? [22:22] <sin> just read the packaging [22:22] <sin> maddog = alcohol. other than that, no. [22:22] <sin> maddog also = giving someone a dirty look (slang) [22:22] <preacherswife> the guy who built our system, said this particular brand and what all it offers, would be just fine for our computer [22:23] <sin> if you trust him, then go for it [22:23] <preacherswife> i currently have xp and am running 2.4 gigs [22:23] <sin> you can always look it up online and read first [22:23] <preacherswife> surely, i trust him...he does work for churches, schools, businesses, etc. [22:23] <preacherswife> it is his home business. : ) [22:23] <sin> thats good [22:23] <sin> that means if you get in a bind, you can always call him [22:24] <preacherswife> is there anything else i should know? [22:24] <preacherswife> we are planning to buy it tomorrow after church [22:24] <preacherswife> tax-free day you know. : ) [22:24] <DSenette-TT> preacherswife maybe you should buy it..and invite the computer guy over to watch [22:24] <DSenette-TT> that way you can do it yourself [22:24] <DSenette-TT> but still be confident [22:24] <preacherswife> good idea [22:24] <DSenette-TT> that way if you get stuck he'll already be there [22:24] <preacherswife> yeah [22:24] <DSenette-TT> then you could have a BBQ after [22:25] <preacherswife> not a bad idea [22:25] <sin> lol DSenette-TT [22:25] <preacherswife> too hot here for that [22:25] <sin> funny, but a good idea [22:25] <preacherswife> we could save on charcoal and cook it using the sun [22:25] <sin> preacherswife, georgia? [22:25] <preacherswife> : ) [22:25] <preacherswife> how did you know that? [22:26] <DSenette-TT> hhehe yup...georgia [22:27] <preacherswife> this deal also comes with roxio 7...is that good? [22:27] <DSenette-TT> roxio is good enough for your needs [22:28] <preacherswife> nero is better though? [22:29] <preacherswife> roxio would be okay for putting digital pics on a dvd right? [22:30] <preacherswife> and the clarity and sound would be very, very good, right? [22:30] <preacherswife> 'cause the other night, i burned my first svcd and the picture quality was just not that clear [22:31] <sin> it depends on the settings you use, preacherswife [22:31] <preacherswife> but with a dvd burner, ALL things would be excellent right? [22:31] <preacherswife> is a dvd burner for my usage going to be worth the money? [22:31] <preacherswife> i am wanting it for pics primarily [22:31] <sin> i would say yes, preacherswife [22:32] <preacherswife> i don't want to spend needlessly and be disappointed [22:32] <sin> preacherswife, it will be worth it. [22:33] <preacherswife> do you mean the settings when i go to actually burn a dvd? [22:33] <sin> you have to save the pictures as high quality [22:33] <sin> the burning software doesnt change that [22:33] <preacherswife> on the computer itself? [22:33] <sin> when you use your digital camera, use the high quality setting when you take the pictures. [22:33] <sin> the lower the quality, the yuckier they look [22:34] <preacherswife> ohhh...i got'cha [22:34] <sin> however, the higher quality you use, the bigger the file is [22:34] <preacherswife> should i begin with dvdrw's [22:34] <preacherswife> or dvdr's? [22:34] <sin> so perhaps something middle to middle-high setting is the best, if you want good quality but reasonable sized files [22:34] <sin> same thing for dvd's, though its pretty much a given on those. [22:35] <preacherswife> until i learn what i am doing, i am thinking of dvd'rw's [22:35] <preacherswife> that way if i mess up, i can erase the data [22:36] <preacherswife> is memorex a decent brand of dvd's to play around with? [22:36] <sin> i like memorex [22:37] <preacherswife> i think it's pretty cheap too, huh? [22:38] <sin> yes they are, preacherswife [22:38] <preacherswife> well, i may give installing a dvd burner a go [22:38] <sin> i highly suggest getting the ads from the sunday papers [22:38] <sin> and watching for sales [22:38] <preacherswife> if i mess up, i will blame ya'll. : ) [22:38] <mike_needs_help> lol preach [22:38] <sin> cd's and dvd's are expensive [22:38] <DSenette-TT> blame sin [22:38] <preacherswife> yeah [22:38] <sin> go for it [22:38] <mike_needs_help> blame sin] [22:38] <DSenette-TT> that way you can talk about it in church [22:38] <mike_needs_help> lol [22:38] <sin> everyone blames me [22:38] <preacherswife> good point there [22:38] <sin> especially preachers' wives [22:38] <DSenette-TT> "sin ruined my computer" [22:38] <preacherswife> that is us! [22:39] <sin> 'sin ruins everything' [22:39] <preacherswife> we can talk about you in sunday school tomorrow [22:39] <sin> awesome [22:39] <sin> tell everyone i said hi [22:39] <sin> ![]() [22:39] <preacherswife> in a few hours actually [22:39] <preacherswife> sin is an odd name [22:39] <sin> preacherswife, 'sin' in spanish means 'without' [22:39] <DSenette-TT> though...wouldn't that make for a quandry if sin's advice actually helps? [22:40] <sin> and so i used to be a math nerd [22:40] <sin> sin is a function [22:40] <DSenette-TT> without sin i wouldn't have been able to install this thing [22:40] <preacherswife> didn't know that [22:40] <sin> trig. [22:40] <DSenette-TT> sine? [22:40] <sin> yeah [22:40] <preacherswife> i love learning things like that [22:40] <sin> except its always written as sin [22:40] <DSenette-TT> ...so...if you had a partner here...would they be cosin? [22:40] <DSenette-TT> nyuck nyuck nyuck [22:40] <preacherswife> cute [22:40] <sin> so, preacherswife, while it usually holds true to form, my nick doesnt necessarily mean 'the original sin' [22:40] <sin> lol DSenette-TT [22:40] * sin smacks DSenette-TT [22:41] <preacherswife> thanks for clearing that up [22:41] <preacherswife> how long would this installation take me? [22:41] <preacherswife> 2 hours? [22:41] <mike_needs_help> not that long [22:41] <sin> probably less than that preacherswife [22:41] <mike_needs_help> lol DS [22:41] <preacherswife> one hour and 59 minutes? [22:41] <sin> even 'not knowing what youre doing', you can probably do it in half an hour to an hour or so [22:41] <preacherswife> no kidding? [22:41] <DSenette-TT> if i'm eating donuts at the time....it takes me 15 minutes to install an optical drive [22:41] <sin> because youre going to need to turn everything off, unplug everything [22:42] <DSenette-TT> if no donuts...8 [22:42] <sin> also, while youre getting your new drive, you might also want to get a can of air [22:42] <sin> blow the gunk out of your computer while you have it open [22:42] <preacherswife> i KNEW there was catch to this [22:42] <preacherswife> turning it all off [22:42] <sin> but make sure you dont spray the fans. [22:42] <preacherswife> : ) [22:42] <sin> lol preacherswife [22:42] <mike_needs_help> lol its easy to install a optical [22:42] <mike_needs_help> takes me 10 mins [22:42] <DSenette-TT> no no...spray the fans...just hold them from moving when you do [22:42] <preacherswife> surely [22:43] <preacherswife> i have two in mine [22:43] <preacherswife> all this does sound challenging [22:43] <sin> its not, preacherswife [22:44] <preacherswife> will i mess up something, if i do it wrong? [22:44] <sin> its hard to do it wrong, preacherswife [22:45] <sin> im Nic, by the way. [22:45] <DSenette-TT> probably not [22:45] <preacherswife> i do so like your confidence in me [22:45] <preacherswife> i did install xp myself! [22:45] <DSenette-TT> generally the worst that happens when you "mess up" a drive install is that it doesn't work [22:45] <preacherswife> for me, that was interesting! [22:45] <sin> and if it doesnt work, preacherswife, you can always put it back the way it was [22:45] <preacherswife> replaced 98 with xp [22:46] <sin> until you have some help with doing it again. [22:46] <sin> but you should be fine, really. [22:46] <preacherswife> and call the right guy [22:46] <preacherswife> well, i will let you nice people know what i chose to do [22:46] <sin> good [22:46] <sin> we'll be waiting [22:46] <sin> so heres what you need to do [22:46] <preacherswife> so glad i found a nice room with patient "pros" that don't mind helping dummies like me [22:46] <DSenette-TT> there we go..google [22:47] <DSenette-TT> http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/cdrom/index.html [22:47] <sin> 1: check the paper for ads/sales [22:47] <sin> 2: buy the drive and the canned air [22:47] <preacherswife> canned air got it already [22:47] <sin> 3: unplug everything [22:47] <preacherswife> this product goes off sale tomorrow [22:47] <sin> 4: open the computer [22:47] <sin> 5: blow the gunk out [22:47] <sin> 6: follow the instructions inside the box to install the new drive [22:48] <preacherswife> you mean unplug all things from the back of the tower right? [22:48] <sin> 7: plug everything back in after closing it up [22:48] <sin> yes, unplug -everything- [22:48] <preacherswife> frm the back? [22:48] <sin> no cords/cables attached while youre doing this [22:48] <preacherswife> or from the outlets? [22:48] <sin> correct, everything gets unplugged from the computer itself. [22:48] <preacherswife> got'cha [22:48] <preacherswife> i am anxious to see what it plugs into when i take a peek inside [22:49] <sin> heres a hint [22:49] <sin> when you open the box [22:49] <preacherswife> yeah... [22:49] <sin> look at the wires that connect the CD drive [22:49] <preacherswife> surely [22:49] <sin> see what kind of connection they plug into [22:49] <preacherswife> i will make notes [22:49] <sin> the DVD drive will plug into the exact type of connection. [22:49] <preacherswife> ohhh... [22:49] <sin> you may end up plugging the dvd into the CD's connection, and plugging the CD into an outlet on the DVD wires [22:50] <preacherswife> will there be a way to check it, if i don't have any dvd's? [22:50] <sin> since you have XP, when you turn your computer back on, itll have popup balloons saying 'found new hardware', etc [22:50] <preacherswife> and that is good? [22:50] <sin> yes [22:50] <preacherswife> bingo! [22:50] <sin> that means its functioning [22:51] <preacherswife> gosh, this does sound easy [22:51] <DSenette-TT> also...dvd drives also read cd's [22:51] <preacherswife> yes, that i do know [22:51] <preacherswife> ohhh... [22:51] <preacherswife> so there is a way [22:51] <preacherswife> duh on me! [22:51] <preacherswife> it's time for bed here...sorry [22:51] <sin> good luck, preacherswife [22:51] <DSenette-TT> http://www.build-your-own-computer-tips.co...-rom-drive.html <-- a guide with pictures [22:51] <sin> im sure youll do fine [22:52] <sin> there ya go, picture guide [22:52] <preacherswife> let me write that down...hang on [22:52] <sin> adam pasted that to me the other day, except it was for installing an internal wireless adapter [22:52] <sin> helped immensely [22:53] <preacherswife> got it [22:53] <preacherswife> ya'll are the BEST [22:53] <sin> preacherswife, heres the thing, im not really a 'hardware' person, but ive installed hard drives, ram, an internal wireless adapter, and cd/dvd drives [22:53] <sin> the more you do, the more you learn [22:53] <DSenette-TT> indeed [22:53] <preacherswife> well, it may not get done until later in the week... [22:53] <preacherswife> that i am learning [22:53] <preacherswife> church stuff you know going on [22:54] <preacherswife> take care now [22:54] <sin> have confidence in yourself, thats the first step [22:54] <DSenette-TT> the hardest parts to install in a computer are processors and well the whole motherboard [22:54] <sin> goodnight [22:54] <DSenette-TT> peace out [22:54] <sin> we'll see you later [22:54] <preacherswife> God bless you ALL! [22:54] <sin> true, DSenette-TT, im not that 'advanced' yet [22:54] <sin> bless you too preacherswife [22:54] <sin> thanks for making me feel helpful today [22:54] <preacherswife> i done good with xp...please don't confuse me with processors and etc... [22:54] <DSenette-TT> hehehehe [22:55] * Quits: preacherswife (JavaUser@privatehost-E05DFF2A.hsd1.ga.comcast.net) (Quit: preacherswife) [22:55] <sin> i want to cry. [22:55] <DSenette-TT> eh? [22:55] <DSenette-TT> it's just a dvd drive [22:55] <sin> i know [22:55] <sin> but thats not it [22:55] <DSenette-TT> something in your eye? [22:55] <sin> i want to cry because i feel helpful. [22:55] <sin> im never helpful. [22:55] <sin> certainly not -that- helpful. [22:56] <DSenette-TT> we know [22:56] <DSenette-TT> hahahahahaha [22:56] * sin smacks DSenette-TT [22:56] <DSenette-TT> we've all got our moments in the su [22:56] <DSenette-TT> n [22:56] <sin> i feel sad that i helped someone. [22:56] <sin> like im empty now [22:56] <sin> like i gave them everything i had [22:56] <DSenette-TT> hahahahahaha [22:56] <sin> and now im afraid that something bad will happen [22:56] <sin> and itll be my fault. [22:57] <DSenette-TT> ....if someone breaks their whole computer installing an optical drive...i assure you it's their fault [22:57] <sin> true [22:57] <sin> but i really like her. [22:57] <sin> she's nice. [22:57] <DSenette-TT> hehe [22:57] <sin> and id hate for something bad to happen. [22:57] <DSenette-TT> if all else fails..she'll call her computer guy [22:57] <sin> now mike needs help. thats someone i could give a shit about. [22:57] <sin> i hate that guy [22:57] <DSenette-TT> musceling in on your lady eh? [22:58] <DSenette-TT> never mind [22:58] <sin> nah, hes a jerk. [22:58] <DSenette-TT> wrong guy [22:58] <DSenette-TT> yeah mike's....different [22:58] <sin> hes not happy about the help he receives [22:58] <sin> hes rude [22:58] <sin> he complains about everything [22:58] <DSenette-TT> he'll get his [22:58] <sin> and questions experts' advice [22:59] <sin> theres a good reason he got banned the other day [22:59] <sin> im pretty sure aaron did it [22:59] <sin> and aaron never bans people. [22:59] <DSenette-TT> man i need to start learning people's real names...adam? aaron? [22:59] <sin> Aaron [22:59] <sin> as in Aaron from microsoft [22:59] <DSenette-TT> oohhh yeah that guy [22:59] <sin> adam = friend. he doesnt come in here. [23:00] <DSenette-TT> mike's a kid...he'll learn things as he get's older....he'll learn them the hard way...but the [23:01] <sin> depends on if he ever pays attention to the lesson though. [23:02] <sin> some people never do learn [23:02] <DSenette-TT> hehe everyone learns something....just no assurances of when and how [23:02] <sin> true [23:02] <DSenette-TT> he'll get the snot kicked out of him at school or he'll get fired from a job...or he'll get a devorce [23:02] <sin> lol [23:03] <DSenette-TT> or something along his life [23:03] <DSenette-TT> that's why i don't worry about tools -------------------- graceful insanity is beautiful when accomplished -- come into the closet
